The sport of mix martial arts (MMA) has grown in popularity like no other sport in history, and big names of famous people involved with mix martial arts are also growing. Sylvester Stallone for example has embraced the sport of MMA by helping to bring famous fighters such as Randy Courture into movies. The recent film “Expendables,” was a huge success at the box office and no-doubt fans of MMA bought tickets to see UFC Hall-of-Famer Randy Couture in action. Couture will also appear in “Expendables 2″ already in the works.

Another famous person who is actively involved in the sport of MMA is none other than Steven Seagal, who is 7thdan and Shihan in Aikido. Unlike Stallone, Seagal has hands on involvement in the sport. He has been secretly training a few big named UFC fighters that have produced big wins recently after training with him. Anderson Silva trained with Seagal before his fight with Vitor Belfort in UFC 126, and credited the front kick he used in the fight to Seagal’s training. Former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Lyoto Machida also trained with Seagal, and Machida also used a similar front kick to win his bout against Randy Couture.

MMA, or mixed martial arts has become one of the most popular sports in the world, drawing in countless spectators and fighter from all across the globe. This fast paced and exciting sport is regarded by many to be the ultimate test for marital artists and other athletes who want to see just how far they can really push themselves. A lot of people from different parts of the world have become avid fans of mixed martial arts, and follow it religiously. Mixed martial arts organizations have sprung up all over the world, giving fighters a number of different places for them to showcase their skills.

A lot of people who aren’t familiar with what’s really going on during a fight will most likely be lost in the action. To many people a mixed martial arts fight just looks like a mindless brawl where the two competitors are trying their best to take each other’s heads off. While some of this may be true, there are several rules that are involved with mixed martial arts, and fighters know just how important it is for them to follow these rules. Mixed martial arts rules were put in place to help protect the fighters from unnecessary injury, and to keep the competition as fair as possible.

Although what many people know as mixed martial arts originated from Vale Tudo, a Brazilian form of no holds barred competition, most modern mixed martial arts competitions follow rules such as no eye gouging, fish hooking, or strikes to the groin. Mixed martial arts fighters are also barred from head butting or biting. Aside from these obvious things, there are also some other rules that mixed martial artists must follow. Similar to western style boxing, MMA fighters are broken down into weight classes, and they are required to meet specific weight requirements before being allowed to compete.

If you’ve got DIRECT TV movies on demand or a basic cable connection you may be lucky enough to catch one of these classics on a rainy day so keep an eye out
Undisputed II: Last Man Standing: This gory thriller takes you right into the ring where you’re thenkicked in the face. It’s a no-holds-barred look inside the MMA industry and there’s a great side storyline as well. What’s not to love?
The One: Starring the immortal Jet Li, The One is all the things you ever loved about Kung Fu movies and more. It’s got action, suspense and a really great villain and it’s tame enough you can even watch it on a date.
District 13: Any movie starring Vin Diesel has to be good but this one is his best to date. There’s a ton of suspense and we love the good-cop bad-cop storyline is always a winner so if you’re going to start small, start here.

What have we learned from in 2010 on the UFC stage? As the end of the year approaches, let’s take a look back at what the biggest and most unexpected storylines have defined a spectacular 12 months in the octagon.Brock Lesnar’s Return and Fall You can’t talk about the biggest stories in MMA without talking about one of the physically largest competitors. In late ’09 Lesnar backed out of UFC 106, where he was all set to square off against Shane Carwin, citing medical issues. It turned out to be a case of mononucleosis, but like many men in the ring, it turned out to be no match for the massive man. Lesnar announced his return in January and fulfilled in at UFC 116, where he submitted Carwin (after much postponement) with a triangle choke. To complete a the year of ups and downs, Lesnar then lost the titles he had unified with his defeat of Carwin by losing to undefeated challenger Cain Velazquez in UFC 121.Rampage Goes Soft in Hollywood Not to take away from Rampage as a person or competitor, it’s simply tough to train when your time is occupied by outside commitments and the good life is at your fingertips. The loss to Rashad Evans, as a result, should’ve come as no surprise (though it did to many onlookers), however, what may have surprised many was last month’s match with Lyoto Machida. Machada is a fine fighter, but by all accounts he simply worked Rampage in the final round, with the fight looking nearly even after two. The real shock came when the judges awarded Jackson with the victory, a decision he even admitted they split the wrong way in a post-fight interview.Chuck Liddell’s Fall from Grace It marked another winless year for Liddell, now losing his only fight in the year 2008, 2009 and 2010. In fact, his last professional win came against Wanderlei Silva in December of 2007, which marked his first win since December 2006, having lost two straight. Yes, Liddell was a great fighter through his first 23 fights, compiling a 20-3 record, but since he is just 1-5. How is a fighter who’s been on the slide losing 1 fight a major storyline? Simply because all signs point to us never seeing Chuck Liddell (still a legend, mind you) in the UFC octagon again.

With little more than 24 hours left before UFC 119 kicks off at 9:00 p.m. on Spike TV, the air is thick with bone-crushing anticipation for a top billed contest that should pit together more than a few interesting bouts. Here are our picks for fights of night, coming from the heavyweight and light heavyweight divisions respectivelyFrank Mir vs. Mirko “Cro Cop” FilipovicThe card’s most intriguing matchup might belong to Mir and Cro Cop, though it may not be the most highly anticipated as Mir is merely a fill in opponent for Rodrigo Nigueira who injured his hip pre-fight and was forced to withdraw. Still, Mir is a legend in the octagon and a very dangerous striker and grappler. Mir is at his best when on the ground though can sometimes be pushed around by much larger opponents, which could come into play tomorrow night. Cro Cop, a former special ops policeman and Croatian politician, hence the name, has made a nice run in recent months and looks to continue a winning streak, though perhaps Mir may be too much to handle if he falls to the mat. This is by far the biggest fight of Filipovic’s career, so don’t expect an easy victory for either side.Antonio Rogerio “Minotoro” Nogueira vs. Ryan BaderBader will finally get a chance to prove he belongs in the upper echelon of the professional level. As season 8′s champion of The Ultimate Fighter, Bader has shown he can fight his way through talent-laden entry level competition, but it remains to be seen if he can hold his own against a seasoned vet like Minotoro. Though Minotoro is a relative new comer to the UFC circuit, making the switch after Affliction went belly up in 2009, he possesses a wealth of MMA savvy and experience and has already demonstrated a pattern of success in his first year with UFC.

The traditional stereotype of steroids springs to mind pictures of muscle-bound meatheads shooting up to get ripped, but in a sport where injury is commonplace if not expected, does it makes sense to provide your athletes with all the healing remedies available?Current commentator and former fighter Dennis Hallman made headlines in recent weeks with his defense of steroid use for medical treatment among MMA athletes. Hallman reasons “if you have a headache, you take an aspirin; if you have a serious injury you take steroids to heal you, that’s the smart thing to do.” To be clear, he does not support the use of steroids to gain a competitive edge, as he continued, “If you’re taking steroids to make yourself a better fighter because you don’t have the skill level or something like that, then it’s a problem.”While Hallman’s comments provide some intriguing food for thought, in addition to his assertion that north of 50 of all fighters are already using banned substances, his argument isn’t thoroughly thought out. Sure, you take Tylenol if you have a headache, but Tylenol is an FDA approved drug, with side effects that have been closely monitored and given the green light by medical professionals. The world of steroids, due in most part to their illegality, is a shady one, even among substances used primarily for healing purposes. Furthermore, steroids are currently banned in MMA competition, just like all other professional sports, looking out for both fair competition and the potential long term health concerns of individual athletes. Were large scale deregulation to be seriously considered, would it even be possible to discern competitors with legitimate medical needs from those simply trying to get the upper hand? Now that many leagues are finally getting a grasp on the rampant steroid use that has plagued professional sports since the late 80s, any perceived step backwards in steroid scrutiny could have major implications and irreversible reprocussions.

UFC 115 was one for the record books from the onset as it marked the fastest sellout in Ultimate Fighting Championship history. In only 30 minutes, fans bought up enough tickets to fill General Motors Place to its capacity. The Vancouver crowd inside the Canucks home arena was not left disappointed as the high energy event lived up to its record breaking billing. Here is a look at what when down, both the good and the bad.Highlights:Rich Franklin As a replacement for Tito Ortiz, who withdrew from his matchup with Chuck Liddell after undergoing neck surgery, Franklin put on an impressive performance, knocking out Liddell as the first round wound down. Proving more than man enough to trade blows with one of the sport’s most revered fighters, Franklin fought through a broken arm on his way to a gritty victory.Carlos Condit & Rory MacDonald Both fighters in the northern border dispute between Condit (USA) and MacDonald (Canada) should walk away with their heads held high. Going almost to the close of the third and final round, this hotly contested battle was clearly the fight of the night. Condit got down early with MacDonald asserting his dominance over the first two rounds. To his credit, Condit did not get discouraged or let up, putting the Canadian on the mat before overpowering him with ground strikes. Though he took the defeat, MacDonald showed a lot of promise for a young fighter still early in his career.Lowlights:Chuck Liddell “The Iceman” may be towards the tail end of his career as this knockout notched the 4th time he’s been KO’d in his last 6 bouts. In the days leading up to his main event matchup with Franklin, Liddell sounded confident with plenty of banter and feather ruffling, but ultimately he could not deliver. Though he did not fight particularly poorly, a first round knockout was hardly the expected result. Fans and peers alike would have liked to see the legend at least go a little deeper into the contest.

At The Ultimate Fighter 12 Media day in Las Vegas, fighter Josh Kosheck made some remarks about UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre that more or less accused him of illegal steroid use. He further announced that he would be willing to submit random blood tests to ensure both fighters are clean when they head into their fight after the taping of TUF 12.Two days after these accusations, Koscheck issued an apology for pointing his finger. He claimed he was not directly accusing GSP of being a steroid user, and did not intend for it to come across that way. He emphasized that his comments were in no way factual and the rumors were part of his hype for TUF. The two are scheduled to fight after the TUF 12 in December and Koscheck does not want his slip of tongue to invalidate GSP’s hard work or talent. He claims he was simply passing on what he’d heard from other sources.GSP rebutted by saying he would be in favor of Olympic style drug testing (a method more thorough than typical urine teststhey can detect a wider range of performance-enhancing drugs). It should be stated that GSP has never tested positive for steroids of any kind. It will be interesting to see if the governing athletic commission decides to enforce a stricter drug testing procedure for this fight.
