Famous People Involved With Mixed Martial Arts

The sport of mix martial arts (MMA) has grown in popularity like no other sport in history, and big names of famous people involved with mix martial arts are also growing. Sylvester Stallone for example has embraced the sport of MMA by helping to bring famous fighters such as Randy Courture into movies. The recent film “Expendables,” was a huge success at the box office and no-doubt fans of MMA bought tickets to see UFC Hall-of-Famer Randy Couture in action. Couture will also appear in “Expendables 2″ already in the works.

Another famous person who is actively involved in the sport of MMA is none other than Steven Seagal, who is 7thdan and Shihan in Aikido. Unlike Stallone, Seagal has hands on involvement in the sport. He has been secretly training a few big named UFC fighters that have produced big wins recently after training with him. Anderson Silva trained with Seagal before his fight with Vitor Belfort in UFC 126, and credited the front kick he used in the fight to Seagal’s training. Former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Lyoto Machida also trained with Seagal, and Machida also used a similar front kick to win his bout against Randy Couture.

Mixed Martial Arts And The Rules

MMA, or mixed martial arts has become one of the most popular sports in the world, drawing in countless spectators and fighter from all across the globe. This fast paced and exciting sport is regarded by many to be the ultimate test for marital artists and other athletes who want to see just how far they can really push themselves. A lot of people from different parts of the world have become avid fans of mixed martial arts, and follow it religiously. Mixed martial arts organizations have sprung up all over the world, giving fighters a number of different places for them to showcase their skills.

A lot of people who aren’t familiar with what’s really going on during a fight will most likely be lost in the action. To many people a mixed martial arts fight just looks like a mindless brawl where the two competitors are trying their best to take each other’s heads off. While some of this may be true, there are several rules that are involved with mixed martial arts, and fighters know just how important it is for them to follow these rules. Mixed martial arts rules were put in place to help protect the fighters from unnecessary injury, and to keep the competition as fair as possible.

Although what many people know as mixed martial arts originated from Vale Tudo, a Brazilian form of no holds barred competition, most modern mixed martial arts competitions follow rules such as no eye gouging, fish hooking, or strikes to the groin. Mixed martial arts fighters are also barred from head butting or biting. Aside from these obvious things, there are also some other rules that mixed martial artists must follow. Similar to western style boxing, MMA fighters are broken down into weight classes, and they are required to meet specific weight requirements before being allowed to compete.

UFC: Year in Review

What have we learned from in 2010 on the UFC stage? As the end of the year approaches, let’s take a look back at what the biggest and most unexpected storylines have defined a spectacular 12 months in the octagon.Brock Lesnar’s Return and Fall You can’t talk about the biggest stories in MMA without talking about one of the physically largest competitors. In late ’09 Lesnar backed out of UFC 106, where he was all set to square off against Shane Carwin, citing medical issues. It turned out to be a case of mononucleosis, but like many men in the ring, it turned out to be no match for the massive man. Lesnar announced his return in January and fulfilled in at UFC 116, where he submitted Carwin (after much postponement) with a triangle choke. To complete a the year of ups and downs, Lesnar then lost the titles he had unified with his defeat of Carwin by losing to undefeated challenger Cain Velazquez in UFC 121.Rampage Goes Soft in Hollywood Not to take away from Rampage as a person or competitor, it’s simply tough to train when your time is occupied by outside commitments and the good life is at your fingertips. The loss to Rashad Evans, as a result, should’ve come as no surprise (though it did to many onlookers), however, what may have surprised many was last month’s match with Lyoto Machida. Machada is a fine fighter, but by all accounts he simply worked Rampage in the final round, with the fight looking nearly even after two. The real shock came when the judges awarded Jackson with the victory, a decision he even admitted they split the wrong way in a post-fight interview.Chuck Liddell’s Fall from Grace Read the rest of this entry »

UFC 119: Something to Sleep On

With little more than 24 hours left before UFC 119 kicks off at 9:00 p.m. on Spike TV, the air is thick with bone-crushing anticipation for a top billed contest that should pit together more than a few interesting bouts. Here are our picks for fights of night, coming from the heavyweight and light heavyweight divisions respectivelyFrank Mir vs. Mirko “Cro Cop” FilipovicThe card’s most intriguing matchup might belong to Mir and Cro Cop, though it may not be the most highly anticipated as Mir is merely a fill in opponent for Rodrigo Nigueira who injured his hip pre-fight and was forced to withdraw. Still, Mir is a legend in the octagon and a very dangerous striker and grappler. Mir is at his best when on the ground though can sometimes be pushed around by much larger opponents, which could come into play tomorrow night. Cro Cop, a former special ops policeman and Croatian politician, hence the name, has made a nice run in recent months and looks to continue a winning streak, though perhaps Mir may be too much to handle if he falls to the mat. This is by far the biggest fight of Filipovic’s career, so don’t expect an easy victory for either side.Antonio Rogerio “Minotoro” Nogueira vs. Ryan Bader Read the rest of this entry »

Josh Koscheck Accuses Georges St-Pierre of Drug UseThen Apologizes

At The Ultimate Fighter 12 Media day in Las Vegas, fighter Josh Kosheck made some remarks about UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre that more or less accused him of illegal steroid use. He further announced that he would be willing to submit random blood tests to ensure both fighters are clean when they head into their fight after the taping of TUF 12.Two days after these accusations, Koscheck issued an apology for pointing his finger. He claimed he was not directly accusing GSP of being a steroid user, and did not intend for it to come across that way. He emphasized that his comments were in no way factual and the rumors were part of his hype for TUF. The two are scheduled to fight after the TUF 12 in December and Koscheck does not want his slip of tongue to invalidate GSP’s hard work or talent.
